NIDEC MACHINE TOOL CORPORATION approaches additive manufacturing from a part-making perspective. Having both additive and subtractive experience allows NIDEC to provide advanced technologies such as Local Shield for 3D printing titanium and AI monitoring with real-time, in-process laser power control. Other materials include aluminum, Inconel, maraging steel, Co-Cr-W alloy, and Invar. The unique, compact design of the LAMDA nozzle delivers two different materials in separate or gradient applications. The use of AI provides anomaly detection and 100% monitoring of the melt pool throughout the entire build cycle for quality control. The closed-loop feedback provided by the monitoring system controls the laser power to fully optimize the melt pool. With a long history of building large machine tools, NIDEC LAMDA systems are able to manufacture titanium parts (in an open atmosphere, without an inert chamber) of nearly any size—so far, 5,000 x 2,500 x 1,600 mm.
